Loxocemus Bicolor Care Guide
I first saw Loxocemus bicolor in person decades ago at VPI Pythons. I was helping a friend move to Texas as he had recently begun working for them. The moment I saw them I knew someday I would work with them. They were so unlike any other “python” as these from the new world. With an unbelievable iridescence, smooth near purple scales and great personality I was hooked! It took more than a decade before a vendor at a reptile expo had a table of captive bred hatchlings from several unrelated pairs available, and with a much lighter wallet, home they went with me! I have found them to be easy keepers here. Voracious feeders out of the egg into adulthood and simple set up enclosures suit them well. I keep hatchlings and adults essentially the same way with a deep cypress mulch bedding, a hide, water bowl and a warm side of the enclosure at 88f cool side in the 70s. At night temperatures drop into the low 70s. This is a species that seems to give many difficulty keeping as imports. I only have captive bred animals in my collection and I can say as captive bred examples they have been super simple to grow, breed and produce here for me. If you like something a little different I can’t recommend them enough! A wonderful keeper and unique in so many ways.
